DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, "Non-Magnetic" marked mvt, Grade 45, 17J, Model 1892, 18S, very heavy 14K gold original B.W.C.Co. OF case with fancy "E.M.Z." monogram initials to rear, black and white photo of a young girl inside rear, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to E.M. Zehnder Superintendent by the Workmen of the Mills of Penn'a N. & B. Co. in Appreciation of his Kindness to Them, Lebanon, April 22, 1899," white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring, nickel damascene, s#7018506. Gross weight of assembled watch 96.8 dwt (150.9 g); gross weight of 14K gold case only with movement, crystal, crown, stem and sleeve removed 41.2 dwt (64.1 g). In need of overhaul but a terrific example of this rare watch, the total production of the open face version of the Grade 45 was only 280 made and this grade was exclusively made as a non-magnetic movement. This watch was presented to Edward Marshall Zehnder upon his leaving the Pennsylvania Nut & Bolt Company of Lebanon, PA for a position as general superintendent of the Scranton Bolt & Nut Company of Scranton, PA. The photo inside the case rear is marked "April 1899 Mary" to its rear and is of Edward Zehnder's daughter Mary. Please see our photos for a copy of an article found in the November 20th, 1899 issue of "The Wilkes-Barre Record" which mentions Mary as lighting the initial fire of the furnaces of the Scranton Bolt & Nut Company as well a copy of an article from the April 8th, 1899 issue of Scranton's "The Tribune" which describes Edward Zehnder and his brother's move from Pennsylvania Nut & Bolt to Scranton Nut & Bolt.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, likely broken mainspring, likely broken balance staff, overhaul needed, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few fine to micro-fine scratches, missing a barrel bridge screw; dial with faint outer chapter hl below seconds-register near 6, some very faint perimeter hls between 10 and 11; excellent hands with some small bits of oxide; case shows very light wear, mild dent at left perimeter of rear, good engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
